MARSHFIELD —
The mother of an 18-year-old Marshfield High School student who was killed in a fiery one-car crash over the weekend said he was a good kid who made a bad choice.
Michael Harrington was going west near 500 Highland St. when the vehicle he was driving went off the road at about 4:40 a.m. Saturday and struck a tree, Marshfield police said. The vehicle caught fire.
Harrington was dead when police and firefighters arrived. The accident occurred a little over a mile from Harrington’s home on Forest Street.
“He was really funny, and just a good kid,” his mother, Marie Harrington, said Sunday. “He just made a bad choice. His father died when he was 11, so he’s with him. But (his father’s death) was hard on him, really hard.”
Marie Harrington said her son was a senior at Marshfield High School. She said he loved the Bruins, drawing and hanging out with his friends.
“I’m going to miss him awful,” she said.
Marie Harrington joined a group of 20 to 30 of her son’s friends for a vigil at a roadside memorial Saturday night. Flowers, candles and signs mark the spot where Michael Harrington died.
Marie Harrington said Michael’s friends are taking his death hard.
“Seeing all of that support was just amazing,” she said. “I want people to remember him for the person he is, not the accident.”
Residents of Highland Street, which is hilly and winding in places, said they heard the sound of the crash but did not realize what had happened.
A section of the road was shut down for several hours Saturday morning as state and local police reconstructed the accident.
The accident remains under investigation. No one else was hurt in the crash, police said.
